HAMMELBURG, GERMANY, 3 July 2026 – Lt Col Hairul Aziz, Senior Instructor at the Malaysian Peacekeeping Centre (MPC), served as an instructor for the United Nations Military Observer Course (UNMOC) Serial II/2026, conducted at the German Armed Forces United Nations Training Centre (GEAFUNTC) in Hammelburg, Germany, from 1 June to 3 July 2026. His appointment reflects MPC’s continued commitment to supporting United Nations peacekeeping training and strengthening international military cooperation.
The United Nations Department of Peace Operations Integrated Training Service (UN DPO ITS)-recognized course brought together 38 participants from 22 countries. In addition to eight participants from Germany, the course included military personnel from Argentina, South Sudan, Poland, India, Ghana, Bangladesh, Thailand, Paraguay, Nigeria, Morocco, Mauritius, New Zealand, the Philippines, Uruguay, Cambodia, Peru, Tanzania, Vietnam, Colombia, Algeria, Egypt, Brazil and Switzerland. This multinational environment provided an excellent platform for professional exchange, knowledge sharing, and enhanced interoperability among prospective United Nations Military Observers.
The four-week programme comprised one and a half weeks of theoretical instruction based on the United Nations Core Pre-Deployment Training Materials (UN CPTM) and United Nations Specialized Training Materials (UN STM). This phase was followed by a Tabletop Exercise (TTX) and five days of Practical Training focusing on essential military observer competencies, including observation and reporting, patrol procedures, negotiation, liaison duties, and information gathering.
The course culminated in a seven-day Field Training Exercise (FTX), known as Exercise BLUE FLAG, during which participants applied their knowledge and skills in a realistic operational environment. Working in multinational teams, they were assessed on their ability to perform United Nations Military Observer duties while responding effectively to complex and demanding mission scenarios.
Lt Col Hairul Aziz’s involvement as an instructor in UNMOC Serial II/2026 further strengthened professional networks among peacekeeping practitioners and reinforced Malaysia’s commitment, through MPC, to supporting effective United Nations peacekeeping operations. His participation also contributed to the development of competent and mission-ready military observers capable of operating effectively in multinational peacekeeping environments.
